commissions & creatures – last month’s cute things

Many of the things I make I show off while I’m creating them, via Twitter and Facebook. But there are usually a number of items I can’t post images of for a while, because they’re commissioned as gifts and I need to wait till they’ve actually been given to their intended recipient before scattering their pictures across the internet. Here then, is a collection of several such items that have now been happily embraced by their new owners, and so can be shown to you in greater detail.

TLDR: Look! More stuff that I made!

tentacle neck pillow

Years ago, the first time we both flew halfway across the continent to visit my parents at Christmas, I told my boyfriend that my real reason for dating him was to ensure I’d have a human pillow on plane trips. I was kidding, of course. Mostly. Kind of. I mean, love and that stuff is really important, but it is so nice to be able to lean against the person next to you on a long, cramped plane flight. Without, you know, causing an awkward incident. Plane travel has become an uncomfortable, trying affair, and a comforting shoulder pillow to help you remain as unconscious as possible for as much of the experience as possible is a wonderful thing.

Still, we can’t always travel with our human pillow companion. Plus some people have unfortunately bony and un-pillow-like shoulders in the first place. So today’s post offers an alternative, handy for travel situations of all kinds, and generally awesome to have around. It would be super cool if someone had cause to use this pillow on a boat trip.

Tard the Grumpy Cat plush

I was a bad blogger and missed last week’s post. I failed to finish it before we left for a long-weekend vacation, and once away we didn’t have wireless, so it didn’t get posted from our vacation spot either. But that means that in place of what I was going to post last week (which will still happen soon), I can share this project with you: a Tard the Grumpy Cat plush.

The Tard the Grumpy Cat cat and meme was introduced to me by someone looking to commission a Tard doll as a gift for his girlfriend, who was rather taken with the adorably frumping kitty. It was one of those projects that was fraught with issues, from not being able to find felt in the right colour (even though I’d bought that colour locally plenty of times before) to not being able to get the body shape and construction right after four tries. About 4 out of 5 projects go just fine, with minor issues to solve. And then there’s that one that just won’t cooperate. Finally though, it did all come together, and because of all the troubles this project was that much more satisfying to complete.

zombie valentine

Alright guys, I have a different sort of valentine for you. It’s perfect for those with a love for intellect, puns, gummy candies and the drooling, shambling, gently oozing undead.

I’m woefully not at all pro-level-awesome at digital drawing, but I still think this image turned out pretty cute, so I’m posting it as a downloadable PDF for any of you who want to use it.

Etsy store SALE!!! Everything 25% off

Ladies and Gentlemen, I interrupt my regular blog programming to bring you… a sale!

Everyone loves a good sale, right? I know I do. So starting today, and lasting through Friday, February 8th, all items in my Etsy store will be 25% off. When you purchase an item, there will be a place over on the right hand side (just under the “How You’ll Pay” section) where you can click on “Apply Shop Coupon Code.” See below:

Click on that, and you’ll get a box to enter a code into. Just input the code adoptAplush, and you’ll receive a 25% discount on your item. (The discount does not apply to shipping, since I still have to pay the same amount to ship it to you – Canada Post doesn’t care about my little sale.)

In a normal retail shop, I admit I myself wouldn’t get very excited about a 25% off sale. But in a store where everything is handmade, and the price directly reflects the material costs and the labour I put into making that one of a kind item all by my lonesome, I think 25% off is pretty darn exciting, really. And look at these guys, just begging you to take them home:

Wedding venues, bridesmaids dresses & wedding crafts

I’m getting married in June and I am so incredibly excited!!!

Seeing as the goal is to only do this once in my entire life, I’m going to take this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to do a little blogging about our wedding plans and adventures.

Jeremy proposed on December 20th, as we perched atop the rocky outcrop of a local viewpoint located in the heart of our former and still much beloved neighbourhood. We had a sparkling view of the city at night, and could hear the ocean behind us as he pulled the ring out.

We’ve been dating for 6 and a half years, and living together for about 4 of those, so I hadn’t thought being engaged and getting married would really change things, even though I wanted to get married because it would mean something different. And it hasn’t changed our day to day lives exactly. Yet things do feel different. I’ll have to ponder this some more and try to unpack it in a future post.

For now, I thought I’d share some of our early plans for the wedding. We jumped immediately into planning, because we need to have our wedding this June. Summer is the only time Jeremy’s sister, my parents and various other important people can be here, and we have a bunch of reasons we don’t want to wait a year and a half. So this summer it is!

paper Fire Flower bouquet

Valentine’s Day is a month away, meaning that Pinterest and Craftgawker and a thousand other online craft venues are drowning in it. As I’ve discussed before, I have a weirdly antagonistic attitude towards Valentine’s Day. At Easter I will gladly coo over sweet baby things, at Christmas I’ll happily haz all the feelings over seasonal cards & darling handmade ornaments. But on Valentine’s Day all the red and pink and hearts hearts HEARTS give me a bad case of the gags. The other holidays feel genuine in their gooeyness, but Valentine’s Day has a contrived saccharine quality, like it’s been soaked, dipped and coated in corn syrup. Which it pretty much literally has.

Perhaps this is because Valentine’s Day tells us not just to express our love, but exactly how to express it, and when and to whom. And most of us love a lot of other things besides teddy bears & heart shaped chocolates & last-minute because-I-have-to-or-she’ll-kill-me flowers. Like books. And video games. And craft supplies, classic movies, superhero socks, fuzzy sweaters, dance music, pistachios, going to the store, feeding the ducks at the pond, catching fireflies, chicken salad sandwiches.

If your darling does like flowers, there are a lot of alternatives to the last-minute corner store variety. So this week I’ll show you how to make a very easy paper posy of Fire Flowers, a charming handmade gesture of affection for the Mario-lover in your life.
