from t-shirt to halter top

Welcome to the second in my series of posts on t-shirt modification. Wow, that sounds very scientific, doesn’t it? Like I’m a tenured professor at the front of a gaping auditorium, about to fill people’s minds with new and revolutionary theories on the alteration of the common t-shirt.

The common t-shirt is found throughout the world, sometimes plain and sometimes printed with colourful graphics and/or text. While a popular item of clothing in many cultures, it is frequently made without consideration for exhibiting the pleasing aesthetic of the female form. Today we will look at a second method of transforming these common articles of clothing, such that they will better flatter the curvaceous nature of the feminine figure.

yarn wrapped bracelets

Ah June. That time of year when the rain comes sporadically and the temperatures refuse to rise and every bit of warm sunshine is just a cruel teaser of what we cannot have in proper abundance.* I’ve given up waiting for the damn weather. As mentioned in my previous post, I’m gonna dress for summer if it kills me. And for summer you need pretty, new, brightly coloured jewelry. Yes you do.

Here’s how to make some for super cheap.

fast & easy blouse mod – bonus post

Start your day off right, with a big bowl of bobbins! Part of this completely insane breakfast.

I’ve decided to dress for how I want the weather to be, regardless of whether or not this in any way reflects the way the weather actually is. So I’ve been digging all my summer clothes out of the attic and doing a few sit-ups. One morning this week I liberated a stack of summer shirts from their winter storage and decided to wear one: a breezy white top my aunt gave me. I put it on and remembered why I hadn’t worn it much last year. It’s adorable, but the sides fit rather like a sack.

This crafting/blogging thing is clearly affecting my sanity, because my solution was to get out my sewing machine. I looked at the clock and thought, hey, I’ve got an hour before work. Might as well! Which just goes to show that owning an easily operable sewing machine can be bad for your mental stability.

cigar box shelving

Throughout the ages, many famous figures have proclaimed that nothing is certain but death and taxes. This seems to me either a poorly thought out remark on the part of Daniel Defoe, Benjamin Franklin, Margaret Mitchell and others credited with its pronouncement, or it indicates that these people ran around naked and did all their reading at the library. Because what is inevitable for me, along with most people I know, are laundry and a shortage of shelving.

You know it’s true. Hands up everyone who’s never, not once, discovered there’s just not enough room on the shelf for all your books, DVDs, CDs, video games, model cars, trophies, knick knacks, crafting supplies etc. If you put your hand up just now you’re either lying or a freak of nature. Unless you’re, like, Mother Teresa or something.

Anyway, the whole point here is that last week I was organizing my crafting area, lamenting a lack of storage space for all my little crafting bits and pieces and wishing for a tiny shelf to store them on. While doing so I came across a cigar box (I have many – they are great for storage & interesting to look at) with a broken lid. And because I have one of those special needs minds of great weirdness wisdom, I immediately realized that these two things – the desire for shelving and a broken cigar box – corresponded with beautiful symmetry and purpose. I have no idea how to achieve world peace, but I can help with your storage problems.

girlify your t-shirts

Ok ladies, it’s time to send the boys for beer and pizza while we have a little girl talk.

You go to a show, a convention, that awesome thing put on by that awesome person or persons that you’ve been dying to go to forever. And you want to buy one of their awesome shirts to commemorate your attendance at this awesome event. They’ve got S through XXXL, unisex. No girl’s t-shirts. No shirts made to actually flatter the female figure instead of making it look bland or frumpy. But you buy a shirt anyway because, like I said, the event was awesome.

I am continually dismayed at the lack of girly t-shirts available at these things, so I’ve decided to take the issue into my own hands. Take that shirt and make it girly. This is my first attempt. It turned out pretty well, and I will be trying other styles with other t-shirts in the future, so stay tuned in the coming weeks and months for more girlified t-shirt tutorials.

For today’s post, I offer you this:

make your own postcards

Ah the postcard, that delightful medium with which to send a brief, picturesque,  jealousy-inducing message to loved ones, detailing the exquisite activities you have been enjoying in delightful climes and exotic places. A cruel form of communication that we blindly insist upon viewing as a token of love and thoughtfulness.

“Wish you were here!” is really just the socially acceptable way of thumbing your nose at someone and calling out, “Look where I am and you’re not – nyah nyah nyah!”

Yet postcards are fun, perhaps for their charming combination of brevity and scenic photography. They’re like the Timbits of snail mail (but with added spite). And everyone enjoys Timbits.

But those scenic postcards down at the tourist centre don’t really have anything to do with your daily life, do they? So if you want to send a postcard to someone when you’re not sunbathing in Croatia or windsurfing in Waikiki or poking around drafty castles of the Loire, you might want to make your own, more personally appropriate postcard.

quick & easy cat ears – a Desert Bus tribute

They’re cute, they’re fun, they’re multifunctional – wear them for Halloween, to anime conventions or just because you feel like it. Cat ears are awesome. They’re also super quick and easy to make, as I will demonstrate to you.

But why cat ears, and why this week? Well, it goes back to last November, when the week-long charity event Desert Bus for Hope was held here in Victoria, BC. Currently preparing for its fourth year, Desert Bus was begun by my pals over at LoadingReadyRun. Every November we get together, play the world’s dullest video game 24/7 and stream the whole thing online. The point is to raise money for the wonderful Seattle-based Charity Child’s Play, which donates toys and games to children’s hospitals worldwide.

Today, we’re announcing Desert Bus 2010 craft-along news over at LoadingReadyRun.com. This is a chance for crafters and artists to donate their original work to Desert Bus to raise even more money. Check out the details (and a silly video) here.

So that’s the “why now” bit. But why cat ears?
