Scaled Wurm – bonus post

So, after hours of pattern re-making and sewing on colourful scales one by one, I’ve got another Magic the Gathering plushie project to show off. This was made for a friend who has a special fondness for the card Scaled Wurm, which figured prominently in his Ice Age deck, back in the day. Like the Perilous Myr plushie, Mr. Wurm is made entirely from felt, which is absolutely my a favourite material and the best thing ever and I’d probably build an entire world out of it if I had the time. One day.

It turns out dragon-ish heads aren’t nearly as difficult to make as I thought they’d be. After a bit of online research, I got the shape nearly right on the first try, but I kept overestimating how big it needed to be and had to downsize twice. The two mock-up heads (which were made of gray felt) got turned into Myr, and I finally ended up with this:

And from there it was all about adding horns and teeth – essential for all wurm-type critters, of course – and sewing a tube with a bunch of scales.

All told, he’s 43 inches long, more than enough length to curl himself into a lovely neck pillow and shoulder warmer.

The body got attached and then detached and reattached when I decided (after sewing it in place, of course) that it needed wire in it to help with shaping it. No sewing project is complete until you’ve spent at least an hour getting better acquainted with your seam ripper.

All in all, I ended up very satisfied with the result. And I managed to keep him from eating any of the Myr or other critters that seem to have invaded our living room. Honestly, as much as I love these creations and as hard as it is giving them up, it’s a good thing other people out there are interested in welcoming them into new homes, or our tiny apartment would be an utter zoo by now.

UPDATE: The Scaled Wurm arrived safely at his destination and his new owner has put up a wonderful blog post with much much more fabulous photos than my own. Check it out here.

  1. So much win! I am going to have to make a mailing list of all the people I played MTG with back in the day so that I can taunt them verily with its awesomeness. #AMillionThankYousAreNotEnough

Thanks Shmoo! Glad you like it. :) As I replied to a similar question on a different post, I have indeed been known to do a particular craft and/or tutorial at the suggestion or request of other people sometimes. I also do make and sell commissioned plushies, though it’s sometimes a bit of a wait before I have the time to take on a new commissioned project. if you wish to chat more about such things, feel free to email me at [email protected]

Blythe: unfortunately I don’t really have much of a pattern for this guy – he was a make-it-up-as-I-go kind of project. I have since learned more about making dragonish shapes, and I am thinking of posting some sort of dragony plush project in the future, so keep checking in!

  12. Hello! Do you know if they make any plugins
to assist with SEO? I’m trying to get my blog to rank for some
targeted keywords but I’m not seeing very good success.
If you know of any please share. Appreciate it!

  13. I think that what you posted made a bunch of
sense. However, consider this, what if you typed a catchier title?
I mean, I don’t want to tell you how to run your blog,
but what if you added something that grabbed folk’s attention? I mean Scaled Wurm –
bonus post | Tally’s Treasury is kinda vanilla. You should look at Yahoo’s front page and
note how they create article headlines to grab viewers interested.
You might try adding a video or a related pic or two to grab readers interested about everything’ve written. Just my opinion,
it might bring your posts a little bit more interesting.
