Halloween party decorations

I must apologize for the fact that it is currently Monday, not Thursday, and this post was meant to be up on Thursday. It’s been a crazy week just passed and it’s only going to get worse as we get closer and closer to Desert Bus. Speaking of which, there are going to be a lot of exciting announcements on the Desert Bus site this week, so check in every so often, and keep an eye on the Desert Bus Twitter and Facebook feeds! One thing I will tell you now is that the Craft-Along items will be posted on Friday, for you to gaze upon in wonder, drool over and plan to bid on. There are so many amazing items this year, and even if you can’t afford to bid on things, see if you can’t stash away $10 or $20 or $30 for the event, because we’ll be doing a bunch of donation drives where you can donate and be entered to win some really really awesome stuff.

Ok, moving on to the actual blog post, this week’s (er, that is, last week’s) post is going to be a straight picture post, showing the decorations and foodstuffs I managed to throw together for our Halloween party last Wednesday. We categorically did not have time for this, nor was it a great idea to have a party mid-week, but as our friend (and a fellow Desert Bus planning crew member) Kara said a while back, “I miss Halloween!” There’s never enough time anymore to do stuff for it, but dammit I like dressing up and having parties. So we did. Even though it was a terrible idea and we didn’t have time. And everyone had fun, and in the spirit of special holiday times, I didn’t even strangle our friend Kathleen for showing up covered in craft herpes (translation: glitter). Amazingly, while she did attempt to rub glitter on other party-goers, very little of it actually transferred to our apartment itself. And when I saw her a couple days later it appeared she had managed to remove the shimmery covering from her own self. I’m convinced she’ll be trying to clean glitter out of her bathtub for months, though.

DIY glasses-and-moustache disguise

It occurs to me that if I’d taken all the time I’ve spent on small, bits-and-pieces Halloween-y costume pieces this year and put it together, I could have actually had time for making a proper, full on costume. But then I’d have had one costuming blog post instead of three. Plus I’ve discovered a brilliant use for those silly 3D movie glasses, which I feel makes up for everything.

Different crafts serve different purposes. They fulfill different needs. Some crafts fulfill the need to make something cuter. Some crafts fulfill the need to make something functional. Some crafts fulfill the need to dress up, to keep body parts warm, to decorate for a party, to de-uglify the living room curtains, to wrap presents in a way that makes you look like you have oodles of free time and are so incredibly clever because you figured out how to incorporate cinnamon sticks into the art of gift wrapping (or you saw someone else be clever on Pinterest & you’re an effective copycat). And some crafts fulfill the need to stick a damn bird on something, anything, or everything.

Today’s craft has the ability to fulfill a trio of rather specific needs. I’ve illustrated this craft’s need fulfillment with a Venn diagram:

ice cube tray candles, and BRAAAAAAINS!!!

Braaaains!!! On fire! Whether it’s Halloween or the Zombie Apocalypse, this craft has got you covered. And you can use the exact same steps in this tutorial with any silicone ice cube tray or mold to produce candles appropriate for all other times and events, too.

Candle-making is actually a very simple craft in its basic form, and fairly inexpensive. I learned how to make candles with aluminum pop cans back in junior high youth group, and have been making them with various molds and containers ever since.

The idea with this tutorial is to give you some of the basics of simple candle-making, plus a way to make candles in silicone ice cube trays that you might want to use later for other things. Like making ice. Or cool shaped chocolates. Or soaps. Or jello snacks. Or crayons. Meaning that you don’t want to poke holes in the bottoms of your trays for the wick to go through, so you’ll need a different method for putting the wicks in your candles. I have for you that other method. And it’s easy and it involves power tools, so there is nothing here not to love. Nothing!

making monsters

I’ve been making monsters all week. Kind of because Halloween is coming up, and kind of because I just like making monsters. Evidence:

I also made Jeremy a bug-eyed swamp monster/dinosaur hoodie for Halloween last year, because when I offhandendly said something about it, he was all like “Sure, I’d wear something like that.” So then I was all “Really?!? Because I will go make it right now then!” So I made it, and he wore it, and his theatre classmates loved it and we took funny pictures of him in it by the UVic fountain and it was awesome.

And then I made some more monsters. In the form of bug-eyed monster hats. Because I’d discovered that making huge bulging cloth eyes and sewing them onto things satisfied a small but important part of my being. The part that wanted to give everything huge bug eyes. Because they’re funny.

crayon leaf wreath

When I was a kid, I figured being a grownup was basically about eating as much ice cream as you want and staying up as late as you like. And it is. Except for where that obnoxious word “responsibility” comes into it. And then, as you get all responsible and mature, you can forget how to be totally goofy and outrageous (or at least how to do it on purpose). Or forget that being totally goofy can be good for you. You can get kind of… boring.

When I was a kid, I’d have dreams that I was Peter Pan. They were the best dreams ever, except for maybe the one where I was got to explore the castle from Beauty and the Beast. Or the one where my friends and I broke into King Solomon’s candy vaults (look, you know he had them – King Solomon had everything).

Now I’m 27. A few weeks ago, I had a dream about folding laundry. And not long after that, I dreamed I was washing dishes.

blue octopus giveaway – the winner is…

Thanks to everyone who read last week’s post and left a comment to enter into the drawing for a wee felt octopus friend! I actually ended up feeling kind of bad about asking the questions I did, because it just seemed to make everyone wish more acutely that they had more time to do these projects and organize these things. I am a terrible person!

But to make up for it, I will now give away something soothingly adorable: this little blue and green octopus. He won’t clean up your crafting room or organize your bookshelves or even finish that project that’s been sitting in the corner half completed for 2 years. But he will gaze at you lovingly and offer encouragement.
