Cthulhu pop-up card

IMG_8245

It’s been a very Chtulhu week, as I worked on pattern drafting and various iterations of a Cthulhu plushie, which I’m calling my Cthulhu D’awwwtagn doll. In keeping with the theme of elder gods and tentacled madness, I thought I’d like to come up with a Cthulhu greeting card.

But this monster doesn’t just slip quietly into your home, no he comes at you and makes his horrible presence known. So a pop-up card seemed most appropriate. There are a few different techniques for making pop-up cards, and this is probably the second simplest.

Take what you learn here and try designing some other pop up cards of your own! A zombie that is actually reaching out at you to grab your brains would be pretty neat, for example…

Or, uh, flowers. Pop-up flowers would be nice.  Read the full post »

Bears of IT

IMG_7324

A little while back I got a commission to make teddy bears who could blend into an office of IT workers. And one bear dressed for a generic upscale office job. I also got a commission (a totally separate one) to make a giant pickle. The point being that in the arena of custom plush-making, you never know what you might be asked to create tomorrow.

Here’s the giant pickle. It’s 2 feet long.

My husband and I hunting for a new apartment right now, so it seemed like every time I sat down to write this week’s blog post, I was called away by one apartment viewing or another, and just kept on not getting the tutorial finished. But despite the fact that it’s 2 days late being posted, this project is incredibly simple and not particularly time consuming at all to complete.

Which is a nice change, because neither of those things are even remotely true of finding a new apartment to live in. Especially if you’re as horribly picky as we are. When you’ve hit your thirties but you’re still renting because the cost of housing is higher than Rob Ford on a pre-election bender and – speaking of politicians – some daft buggers or other screwed with the economy right about the time you’d normally have been landing your first grown up job and opening an RRSP, your tolerance for shittiness goes way down, and your concern about up-to-date appliances and the state of the baseboards ramps way up.

Anyway.

I can’t for the life of me remember how I first got the idea for this, but I’m super pleased with how this particular and somewhat random craft project turned out. It makes a great little customizable jewelry organizer, and the magnets on the back (though you can make it to attach via screws if you prefer) mean it’s very apartment friendly – no holes in walls necessary for hanging it up. All you need is a metal surface (a filing cabinet, medicine cabinet, the side of a metal desk…) and you’re golden. You could also put one on the fridge or the side of the microwave to hold keys and such.

Keep this one in mind six months from now, too, because I’m pretty sure it could make a great Christmas gift for someone who needs a little extra and nifty-looking organization in their life. Read the full post »

the adventures of UrK & Wrbbl

A few weeks ago I made some very fuzzy, very neolithic (in the stereotypical and not at all historically accurate sense) costumes for a LoadingReadyRun video about some cavemen who are ahead of their time. Besides covering our entire living room in soft, clingy, static-y fuzz, it also left me with some small-but-too-large-to-throw-away faux fur scraps.

The fur scraps ran into some felt scraps and they all bumped into my sewing machine, and became creatures.

Then this happened.
